Power to turn Negators into Power Users! Law of Fandom Negators Reverse!
Andy, power to turn body parts into weapons - upon taking damage, Andy can turn the parts of his body that are removed into weapons; typically this will only apply to his blood turning into bullets or blades, as he does not have a healing factor to recover what is lost; Level 2: instantaneous healing - allows Andy to heal from any damage, even fatal, so long as he is able to activate his base power first; so long as he is not knocked unconscious (thus losing his power), he can recover indefinitely; Talents - close combat, skill acquisition, stunts; Goal - talent to raise a family (wants to live a fulfilling life surrounded by a loving family)
Fuuko, power to turn good luck into bad - by touching a target, Fuuko afflicts them with bad luck dependent on how long she was in contact with them; as in canon, Fuuko can set up what the bad luck will entail through careful planning; Level 2: future sight; Fuuko is able to see into the future to determine how the bad luck will play out; Talents - dodging, friendship, drawing; Goal - talent for romance (wants a relationship straight out of a shoujo manga)
Billy, power to turn others’ powers into his own - by spending time with a target and learning how their abilities work, Billy is able to copy their powers; as in LoU canon, Billy must spend at least 24 consecutive hours with his target; Level 2: use the target’s Level 2 without mastery; Talents - sharpshooting, hearing, baking; Goal - talent for fairness (wants to bring balance to the world as a whole)
Juiz, power to turn morals into opposing actions - upon understanding a target’s moral compass and sense of justice, Juiz can force an action she perceives as upholding that justice into its opposite, such as attacking a friend when one is fighting to protect their friends; Level 2: mind reading; by reading the target’s mind, Juiz is able understand their sense of justice without needing to spend time analyzing the target’s actions; Talents - fencing, leadership, popularity with girls; Goal - talent for joy (wants to be able to make her loved ones happy)
Nico, power to turn memories into the present - allows Nico to reenact actions that he has performed or witnessed, such as allowing him to perform martial arts techniques that he’s seen others use, though he cannot use the powers of Power Users; Level 2 - memory ghosts; Nico can create a “ghost” of others so as to be able to recreate multiple memories simultaneously or to have access to powers he otherwise wouldn’t; Talents - eidetic memory, invention, studying; Goal - talent for knowledge (wants to know and understand all aspects of science)
Gina, power to turn fluids into solids - allows Gina to create constructs from fluids such as water or air so long as she is in contact with the fluid; though air is more readily available, the fact that it’s invisible makes it more difficult to work with; Level 2 - thermal vision; helps Gina to see the flow of the air or water that she solidifies, making her power easier to use; Talents - makeup, art, fashion; Goal - power to remain (wants to be able to maintain the life and relationships that she has)
Shen, power to turn intentions into their opposite - so long as Shen is looking at a target, he can force them to behave in the opposite of how they intend, such as moving backward instead of forward, kicking with their left instead of right leg, or lying instead of telling the truth; Level 2 - eye tracking; allows Shen to maintain a visual on his target at all times, even if there is something that would otherwise obscure his vision such as a smokescreen; Talents - kung fu, habit identification; Goal - talent for victory (wants to be able to defeat any opponent he faces)
Tatiana, power to turn clothes into a barrier - turns her clothes into an impassable, spherical barrier that Tatiana can adjust the size of; unlike in LoU canon, this does render Tatiana naked while using this power instead of making her clothes themselves impassable; Level 2 - barrier reshaping; allows Tatiana to change the shape from a sphere into whatever she pleases, such as making it cylindrical or bringing it to a point; Talents - self-censorship (hiding her body with her hair), multitasking, plushie collecting; Goal - talent for togetherness (wants to stay with her loved ones forever)
Top, power to turn slowness into speed - when Top would try to slow down or something would try to slow him down such as air resistance, Top’s speed increases; Level 2 - armor manifestation; because moving at high speeds is physically dangerous for Top’s body, he is able to create armor to reduce the strain on his body and further decrease drag; Talents - running, jumping, pain tolerance; Goal - talent for raising money (wants to provide for his loved ones)
Isshin, power to turn objects into shields - hardens objects to the point of invincibility, but only those actually made by Isshin; Level 2 - assimilation; allows Isshin to integrate disparate objects together, allowing her to make new objects on the fly rather than needing to take time to forge objects; Talents - metallurgy, crafting, calligraphy; Goal - talent for confidence (wants to be able to believe in herself)
Chikara, power to turn motion into stillness - makes anything he is looking at with both eyes come to a complete stop so long as he is also still; Level 2 - focusing vision; allows Chikara to focus his vision on specific targets rather than generically on everything in his field of view; Talents - comedy, reflexes; Goal - talent for bravery (wants to stop being a coward)
Void, power to turn avoidance into paralysis - when Void attacks, any attempt by his opponent to avoid the attack causes them to become paralyzed; Level 2 - fist empowerment; makes Void’s punches more powerful; Talents - boxing, showmanship; Goal - talent to belong (wants to feel accepted wherever he is)
Ichico, power to turn exhaustion into energy - lets Ichico remain conscious at all times (unless knocked unconscious), though she will still feel tired or exhausted; Level 2 - astral projection; allows her body to rest so as not to overtax herself outside of battle; Talents - research, inspiration, neurology; Goal - talent for cleanliness (wants her work space to stay clean without needing to take time out of her research)
We don’t know enough about Phil yet for me to make an entry for him, but we should in the next few weeks hopefully. I might also do Under later, but for now, the Union will suffice
It was surprisingly easy to justify all of these as “turning A into B,” but it is kind of sad that nearly all of them by necessity are conceptual powers rather than being transfigurative. They’d fit in, but there’s a reason that conceptual powers are few and far between in LoU
The real fun part was coming up with the Level 2s and the Talents, since those required a little more thought beyond just recontextualizing the powers that the cast already has

Kind of obsessed with the idea of a series with a character in the archetype of The Strongest (like Gojo, All Might, or Eidolon) where them being The Strongest is intrinsically tied to the fact that their power is not from the same power system
I don’t mean this in the way that Jujutsu Kaisen has both Cursed Techniques and Heavenly Restrictions or how One Piece has both Devil Fruits and Haki
I mean this like Eraserhead interacting with a Parahuman and wondering why the fuck his power doesn’t work on someone that’s clearly not a Heteromorph
Or a setting with a bunch of Espers and everyone has to mentally overpower their opponent whenever they use their powers on a living being but this one character doesn’t because “it’s all matter. Why would it being alive or not make a difference?” because they fundamentally don’t need to account for that because That’s Not How Their Power Works

I love that Solas bequeaths two of his homes to the Inquisitor and Rook, and the first thing these rag-tag leaders do is to yeet themselves off the highest point.

The whole framing of Lestat as the sole symbol of patriarchy that fandom is so desperate to put him in doesn't work unless you deliberately ignore how he was also a victim of rape and abuse before he was turned. People want him to be fit into this strict role of "father figure/violent husband/perpetrator" that is only that and not even a whole person, and in doing so they need to push aside the fact that despite being his family's provider, he was also pushed into that role when his father forbid him from joining a monastery or gaining an education that he wanted. Lestat wanted to run away with a theater group as a kid, and actually managed to do so once Gabrielle gave him her blessing and monetary support in order to go to Paris. He didn't always want to be the provider, he was forced into that role and became despondent when he thought he would never get a chance to leave his home.
His new life prior to being turned is pretty much the antithesis to the whole "Lestat is a manly man who would sooner throw up than be compared to a woman" spiel: he lived with another man in Paris while also being an actor, having left his family and "responsibility" to them. The only family member he was ever close to was his mother, all the other male members shunned or ridiculed him. Add onto that the fact that his turning firmly placed him within the role of the damsel/victim: he's kidnapped from his bed by a stranger, taken into a tower and left to rot while being fed on for a week, before then being raped and violently turned all while never even being asked if he would consent to it in any normal circumstance. But you of course have to ignore all of this if you want him to only represent the aggressor/patriarch while Louis is the helpless unhappy matriarch of the family.
My issue isn't that I think Louis isn't a victim, it's that it's not unrealistic for Lestat to be an aggressor/abuser while also displaying traits that aren't regularly assigned to stereotypical depictions of male characters. He's abusive to Claudia while also having been a victim of abuse from his own family. He's not a good maker/teacher, but he also didn't even have one when he was turned. He's the provider/attempted protector of the family and seemed to like being that, while also having run away from his own family prior to this to act in a theater in Paris. He's a rich white man while also being obviously effeminate in public spaces, even to Tom's own bigoted humor.
Like Louis' own complicated story with being his family's benefactor and provider, you can't firmly place Lestat as being one thing or another in terms of gender ideals without deliberately ignoring parts about him that don't fit this. And I don't think it's an absolute necessity, when even in Louis' own story, Lestat isn't stripped of his effeminate mannerisms or behavior while also being the abusive maker/father/lover.

The FYLSE is coming up again and I'm really starting to stress out.
I will never get used to the fact that "I wasn't stealing it; I was borrowing it" is somehow a real defense in common law.

Shout out to my comfort shows: ducktales for when I’m depressed and milo murphy’s law for when I’m anxious. These silly lil cartoons soothe something in me, it’s absurd how at ease they make me feel

USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

It's my birthday today, and I am lucky to be able to celebrate it in the comfort of my home! Some, however are not so lucky.
It would mean the world to me if you could give at least a small donation of $5 to the fundraiser I've linked below. Please reblog as well after donating, or even if you can't donate, so that it may reach others who are capable of donating.
I can vouch for the legibility of this fundraiser! Here's a post by @gothhabiba explaining the same. He is the brother-in-law of @ma7moudgaza2, so you can rest assured that the money is going to a good cause.
Ahmed (@ilovelifetbh) has two small children. One is three years old while the other, Anas, is only one. He was born in the beginning of the days of the genocide and has known nothing but death and destruction his whole life! Can you imagine! Please put yourself in his shoes for a second, and be compassionate. As fellow human beings, help restore hope to him and his wife after the tragedy of the destruction of his house. The money will help him rebuild his house and provide for his children.
It is not an exaggeration to say your contribution could save lives! Ahmed currently only has $226 on his fundraiser! That's extremely low, it's not even enough to cover costs of the absolute basic necessities of life in Gaza, what with the soaring prices!
I am willing to make you a fully coloured drawing of anything you'd like for the first five people who make a donation of more than $50. Just reply to this post and I will reach out to you with details on what I can do (provided you have proof of donation).
The first ten donations of more than $10 will get smaller doodles depending on the amount donated (again, provided you have proof of donation)
Here are some examples of my art:

I hope to help my family who are besieged in Gaza🍉
Hello everyone, I hope you read my story
I am Hassan Shamiya from the Gaza Strip. I am 28 years old. I work as a lawyer in the Gaza Strip. I am married to Saji Abdo. She is 22 years old from the Gaza Strip. I am studying accounting.
Tumblr media
I will tell you our story after October 7 in light of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip
I used to live a stable life in Gaza City, from home to work. Our life was full of happiness in our home in the city of Tamm. Our life turned into a nightmare in the war that changed our lives and we became without a home, living inside a tent on the street. There were no necessities of life such as water, electricity, clothing and food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In light of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, we went through very difficult circumstances and we were displaced several times. During the displacement operations, I lost everything, I lost my home, and I lost my law office, which was my only job and source of income, which was destroyed by the Israeli bombing, which was non-stop. And my wife, who lost stability due to the cessation of her university studies while she was in the third year, and who, at the present time, had to stop studying and help me work for our life’s requirements and live a safe, happy life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the marriage process, my wife and I lost a stable life. We were exposed to several skin diseases due to the pollution of the place in which we live, and our psychological state became bad due to their deprivation of a happy, stable life and a life full of happiness.
I need donations for a safe exit from the Gaza Strip to safety for me and my family.
Thank you
Hassan
My heroic friends who support the Palestinian cause... Today, after we have lost hope in this world, I ask you to help us and stand by🇵🇸❤️

okay, if you have ever made or reblogged a “hold your nose and vote for biden” post, this is for you.
here’s the fucking thing about these kinds of posts. i've been seeing them since i first returned to tumblr in, I think, late 2022? they've certainly increased in frequency since october 7, but they were there before too, ready to counter any kind of opposition to biden that has cropped up. many of them are not just trying to educate people about what positive things biden has done, which, like, at least I can understand the motivation behind those ones? but so many of them are directly in response to people criticizing biden, and their only real point is “sure you’re upset at this thing biden did, but have you considered the election?” starting YEARS before the next presidential election, mind you.
and october 7 only made that clearer. i don’t think it had been a week before i saw these posts cropping up. can you not see how fucking ghoulish that is? to look at the rightful pain and anger of those whose relatives and communities are being slaughtered with active american support, to respond to one of the few pieces of agency most americans have in influencing what their governments do – their vote – by saying “yes but trump would be worse.” as if the primary people you’re lecturing – palestinians, muslims, arabs, black people, indigenous people, disabled people, other marginalized people – don’t remember exactly how bad it was under trump!
and even if you think not voting is an empty gesture – something i, who studied political science at a mainstream american lib college, who has worked as a field organizer on a previous democratic presidential campaign and for several policy campaigns, who currently works in public policy in america, used to believe, but have absolutely changed my mind on – what is in no way an empty gesture is saying publicly that you will not vote for someone. the arguments people usually have about why simply not voting is bad are that you can’t tell why someone is not voting, so it is as likely to be apathy or disenfranchisement as it is a political statement. but saying publicly that you will not vote for someone, and why you will not vote for them, absolutely is a political statement, and potentially a powerful one! but you choose to negate and/or ignore that by trotting out the “lesser of two evils” bullshit.
and then there’s the whole “yes but people will DIE under trump”. PEOPLE ARE DYING NOW. even if you’re fucking racist and have decided that palestinian lives don’t count, have you forgotten biden’s ongoing covid minimalism and dismantling of the CDC’s covid research and prevention infrastructure? have you forgotten his increase in spending for law enforcement scant years after the murder of george floyd and his administration's surveillance of protesters, including cop city protesters? have you forgotten his recent ramp-up in deportations of undocumented immigrants, including the active continuation of many trump-era policies?
maybe you have forgotten all those things and do purport to care about palestinians, but you just think that biden is doing his best to influence netanyahu and is getting nowhere! but then you must have forgotten all of the things that biden and his administration themselves have done to further this fucking genocide, including:
continuing to send arms to israel
putting together a military task force within days of yemen’s red sea blockade and attacking yemeni ships
bombing yemen
bombing syria
bombing iraq
vetoing three ceasefire resolutions at the united nations
testifying to defend israel and its genocide and occupation at the international court of justice
refusing to rescue palestinian-americans stuck in gaza
halting funding to the united nations relief and works agency for palestinian refugees (UNRWA) based on israeli claims that 12 of UNRWA’s over 30,000 staff were hamas agents, even though u.s. intelligence has not been able to independently verify this
lying that he’s personally seen photos of babies beheaded by hamas when he hadn’t because they didn’t exist (and even when his own staff cautioned him that reports of beheaded babies may not be credible)
questioning the number of palestinian deaths reported by the gaza ministry of health (when even israel has not questioned them, since they are in fact proud of those numbers)
perpetuating lies about hamas having committed the attack on al-aqsa hospital
questioning united nations reports of adults and children raped by israeli soldiers while claiming to have proof (that no one else has seen) of hamas doing the same
honestly so many more things that i can’t remember them all but others feel free to add
or maybe you haven’t forgotten any of that, and think that you’re still justified in lecturing people about why they should vote for biden, because you genuinely believe trump would still be worse. if that is the case, you have still failed to see that by saying you will vote for biden no matter what, you are part of the problem of biden continuing to act like this. because biden is counting on fear of trump to win him this next election no matter what else he does. despite his appalling polling numbers, despite the knowledge that he is losing the palestinian-american vote, the arab-american vote, the muslim-american vote, the black american vote, the youth vote – despite all of that, he is secure in the idea that he will still win because he is better than trump. can you not see how that allows him to act without impunity? how it becomes increasingly impossible for his base to influence what he’s doing if he thinks that they will be with him no matter what? this is how you make yourself complicit to biden’s actions, by not affording anyone even the slightest power to hold him accountable for anything.
and in most cases, the “hold your nose and vote for biden” thing is the response of people who aren’t even being instructed by others not to vote for biden. it is their response to people saying they themselves are choosing not to vote for biden. fucking ghoulish.

There’s been endless talk about bodies vanishing in Gaza: martyrs who don’t just die but are erased, turned into nothing more than smoke rising into the sky, like their souls got hacked and rage-quit existence entirely. And no, this isn’t some cinematic moment or dystopian novel. This is our everyday reality, unfolding in front of us like a cursed game with no exit.
Bullets? Sure, horrifying, but they play by rules. You’ve got entry wounds and exit wounds. Grotesque, but at least they make sense. Shrapnel? Same deal. It tears through you, maybe stays lodged, maybe tears its way out. Awful, but still following some logic. Both bullets and shrapnel can, yes, kill you, but they won’t make your body vanish.
But the weapons used by the IDF? They don’t just kill; they erase you. They leave nothing behind but the void, as if the universe itself decided you were a bug in the system and patched you out. These weapons aren’t just meant to kill; they’re engineered for maximum obliteration. Their purpose isn’t just destruction, it’s erasure. Like someone thought, "What if war, but with a side of existential dread?"
You can see that in this video. A martyr’s body lying in the dirt, and this strange black-and-white smoke curling out of him, like his very existence was being deleted in real time. It wasn’t fire. It wasn’t anything normal. It was like the laws of physics glitched out around him, like reality had decided to rage-quit too. It wasn’t just a death; it was a redacted event.
But here’s the thing: the Gazan people are still holding on. Barely. We’re clinging to what’s left of life as if it’s the last lifeline in an impossible final boss battle. But let’s be real, we can’t do it alone. There’s no Phoenix Kit or supply drop coming for us. That’s where you come in. Please help us. Donate and reblog this post to spread our story. BTW, this isn’t just my battle. It’s for 26 lives, including two orphaned children who’ve lost everything, and a family member battling hemiplegia after shrapnel tore through her during a bombing. She need urgent surgery to replace the infected, failing plates keeping her alive. The stakes couldn’t be higher. The future of 26 lives rests in your hands.

Law of Ueki jumpscare! Law of Fandom Negators!
Ueki, Unwaste - negates wastefulness by allowing Ueki to turn anything he conceptualizes as trash into plant-life; later on, Ueki changes his concept of waste to refer to things that are lost in the course of a process, allowing him to revert targets or victims of transformation back to their original state
Mori, Unchaste - negates a target’s chastity by making them obsessed with a particular focus; ordinarily, this would make the target obsessed with the user, but because of Mori’s interpretation of Unchaste, the target develops a glasses fetish, to the point that they can be manipulated by threatening to destroy a pair of glasses
Sano, Unsoft - negates the softness of objects by making them hard; specifically, he hardens soft towels into hard iron, shaping the towels into weapons before transforming them
Rinko, Unstable - negates the stability of an object, making it explosive; because they’re cheap and easy to use, Rinko tends to use beads as ammunition for her ability
Hideyoshi, Unsilent - negates silence by creating an echo of a sound that Hideyoshi has recently heard; because of his interpretation that a sound must come from a source, a crude portrait of the sound is created to replay the sound, either on a loop or when triggered by certain stimuli
Robert, Unflawed - negates the flaws of a target object, making them into their ideal form; for example, Robert’s tea cup will never spill, projectiles always hit, shield’s never break, etc.
Li Ho, Unvulnerable  - negates vulnerability by allowing Li Ho to turn parts of his body into weapons; however, as a martial artist, Li Ho refuses and is ironically unable to actually use this ability, as his ability to defend himself through technique means that he already isn’t vulnerable in a traditional sense
Anon, Unfair - negates the fairness of competition by allowing him to take on the powers of others; unlike Billy’s version in canon, Anon takes his target’s power by eating them in whole or in part, based on the idea of “you are what you eat;” because of this interpretation, Anon’s true ability is to more or less absorb his target, integrating them into himself rather than actually killing them, thus allowing him to regurgitate them later if needed
Tenko, Artifact Apocalypse - self explanatory, Tenko is there instead of Apocalypse

Hi, me being white and Scottish does not negate the fact that I am a disabled immigrant living in America.
I have restrictions on my income, restrictions on how I can travel, and whether or not I can vote, and I am almost entirely reliant on my spouse for everything. If I am forced to leave him, as I have been made to do so in the past due to immigration red tape, my care will decline, I will lose access to healthcare, and there's a very real chance I will die.
I was, in fact, dying before he was able to move me here and take care of me full-time.
Nowhere did I say I know what it's like to be a person of color. Nowhere did I claim to know what it's like to come to this country in the worst of circumstances, unable to speak the language or deal with the horrendous, vile human rights violations that happen at the borders of this country to anyone who cannot afford to come in legally.
I was stating a fact because whenever I say I cannot vote, people scream at me to register, and I have to explain to them time and time again that as an immigrant without citizenship, I can't vote.
"Well you're husband can just go to Scotland--"
HAHAHA tell me you know NOTHING about UK politics without telling me.
As a disabled person, I do not meet the UK income requirements to sponsor my husband into the UK. I barely earned enough before my disability made me unable to work full-time. The laws changed six weeks before our wedding and we had to pivot our life plans on a dime.
If I go home, I go home alone. And again, I cannot do that. I am not being romantic when I say I'll die without him. I am being factual.
The NHS is gutted. My parents are elderly and caring for my adult brother with brain damage and can barely pay their electric bills. My friends are all barely making rent. What safety net do you think I can leave for?
Yes, my skin color keeps me safer than so many other people who deal with far, far worse. I am not and will never deny that. But that doesn't negate that I cannot vote in a country I am living in. And it makes me feel so profoundly helpless when I see people saying voting doesn't matter because it does. Voting matters. If it didn't, people wouldn't be working so hard to take it away from you.

In Defence of Buttercup
Buttercup’s supposed passiveness is the crux of most critiques of The Princess Bride. But I’d argue that Buttercup acts in her own interests throughout the movie, making moves to secure her own future from her position of powerlessness. For the entirety of the movie barring the first and last scenes, Buttercup is a captive. She has to marry Humperdink in accordance with the law- she has no choice. In this moment we see her at her most passive. She’s accepted that he will marry her regardless of her feelings and she seeks her happiness in other places. Then she gets kidnapped. From that moment to the end of the movie Buttercup gets passed back and forth as the trophy everyone fights over. However, she doesn’t sit idly by. She attempts to escape Vizzini by jumping overboard into eel infested waters. That’s a brave move. She doesn’t know who is on the other ship she swims towards. She only hopes they won’t kill her like Vizzini plans to. Her failure doesn’t negate the bravery of her actions. Then she defies Wesley before she knows his identity. She tries to kill him by pushing him down the hill. He turns his back for one second and she makes a move against a man who she thinks will likely kill her. She saves Wesley when they exit the forest. Yes, it backfires, but she doesn’t know that. From that point on, Buttercup makes deals and argues with Humperdink in an attempt to get out of her betrothal. She uses any argument in her arsenal. It doesn’t work because she doesn’t know what he has planned for her.
Do you notice a theme? Because as I wrote this I noticed that Buttercup makes moves without context, which is why her escapes never work. She is a character acting without the information to succeed. That’s not her fault. That’s not passivity. That’s plot. The plot actively works against Buttercup freeing herself. So maybe we cut her some slack.

Is "hijra" a slur? Contextualizing South Asian (trans)misogyny
A note on the sheer cultural diversity of the subcontinent
There is no realistic way for me to exhaustively examine the context of every South Asian transfeminized population (though believe me, I’d like to). As such, I’m going to limit my scope to India, but make a quick initial note about Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Pakistani transfeminized communities, according to my partner’s sisters who are in the community, do consider ‘hijra’ more derogatory than their Indian counterparts necessarily do and refer to themselves as part of the ‘khwaja sira’ community.
I have sadly not been able to speak to any transfeminine people from Bangladesh, but I have spoken to cis queers who have told me that they use ‘hijra’ in a manner similar to India.
If there are desi queers from those communities who would like to add their perspectives, please feel free to reblog. And for the South Asian communities I haven't mentioned (such as Sri Lanka), please feel free to add your perspectives too! I'm curious to hear from you all.
Etymology and Usage
‘Hijra’ in its meaning and usage amongst the cis is most similar to the word ‘naamard’ (NAH-murd). The ‘naa’ is prefixal, a negation akin to ‘non’, while ‘mard’ is the word for ‘man’. It is a way of unmanning a man, of calling him lacking in the essential quality of manhood, of labelling him, in spirit if not in body, impotent.
As such, you can see how it’s an implicitly third-sexing construction (even before you account for how these communities are explicitly third-sexed, denied the epistemic autonomy to be recognized as women and now third-sexed by law). When Nanda called them emasculated homosexuals, it was not far off from how Indian culture forcibly categorizes and marginalizes them.
Members of the community have told me about their frustration and anger at being referred to as such, even though the word has now become a term through which they organize the community and sometimes advocate for themselves, a political reality that does not inherently contradict their campaigns to be recognized as women, and allowed to self-ID as such. (Recall, the Indian government currently mandates legal third-sexing of the hijra: they must first obtain a “Trans Certificate” and be documented as a third sex before they initiate the process of being recognized as women—a process that is contingent on subjecting themselves to transmedicalist scrutiny and gatekeeping!)
Others, however, have pointed out to me that the term is undergoing a process of reclamation. The term ‘hijra’ has a certain degree of legibility in Indian society even as it is a pejorative with degendering and dehumanizing connotations. It is being reclaimed intracommunally, but also by allies who speak of them without the usual stigmatizing connotations that cis society has saddled the term with.
Even still, I have also been told that the manner in which cis and especially Western academics use the term in scholarship—and I’m quoting here—"makes me want to tear my skin out". The fictions of “recognized gender role in Indian society” and “oppressed only after colonialism” are further simplifications and fabrications that obfuscate the role South Asian ruling-class collaborators eagerly played in petitioning for those colonial-era laws, and ignore such easily available empirical evidence as the Manusmriti mandating punishments for anyone who sleeps with—ugh—“eunuchs”.
Conclusion
In sum, I’d liken the use of the word “hijra” as analogous to the usage of “queer” in the 90s, as a slur in the contentious, contextual process of being reclaimed. As Aruvi put it to me on Bluesky:
Tumblr media
We cannot allow cis people to dictate the discursive and epistemic terms of transfeminine culture. At the same time, the term “hijra” still carries with it heavy baggage due to South Asian transmisogyny as well as the academic misrepresentations and epistemic extractivism that Western scholarship has subjected South Asian transfeminized demographics to.
If you want to know how best to use the term, try to do so without third-sexing, and without promulgating fictive ideas of South Asian cultures being “gender-expansive” and “recognizing more than two genders”. Erasing the marginalization of the hijra is endemic to the way the term is used in the West, and that must absolutely be combatted.
On a final, personal note, I also wish to clearly state that I do not reject the label ‘hijra’ because I consider myself essentially different from them. Many Indian (usually upper-caste) trans women wish to distance themselves from the hijra, as though reproducing our society’s disgust for them will spare them from the same fate. That is not an attitude I share, or wish to normalize. The hijra—both those who affirmatively identify with the term, and those who wish to distance themselves from it—are my sisters.
I have simply not been granted the honor of being part of the communities and kin structures, and I do not wish to appropriate their struggles out of respect. Even still, their struggles are and will always be mine.
